The WordCamp Sydney (WCSyd) organising team can provide you with an invitation letter to accompany your Australian visa application.
We do not send the letter. You must print a copy and attach it to your visa application.
We do not process your visa. You must apply to the Australian Department of Home Affairs for a visa to enter Australia.
You MUST have a ticket before the letter is provided.
Our invitation letter will state the following:
- That you are attending or speaking at the event
- The dates of the conference
- The address of the conference venue
- The purpose of the conference
- The conference website URL
- My contact details
What Type of Visa Do You Need To Apply For?

Visa for International Speakers
Conference speakers coming to Australia typically apply for a Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) under the Invited Participant stream. This visa allows individuals to participate in events, such as conferences, as invited speakers, presenters, or contributors.
If the event is short-term and involves little or no formal work, some speakers may opt for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), which also allows participation in business visitor activities, including conferences, seminars, or trade shows.
You can use the venue address in the invitation letter for the organisation’s address in your visa application.
Visas for International Attendees
International conference attendees (not speakers or participants) coming to Australia typically apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) under the Business Visitor stream. This visa suits individuals attending conferences, meetings, or other business-related activities.
If the conference is short-term and you meet the criteria, you could also apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (subclass 601) or an eVisitor visa (subclass 651), depending on your nationality. These options allow for faster application for and allow business visitor activities, including attending conferences, without needing a formal application process like the Visitor visa (subclass 600).
